Collisions involving bicycles kill over 100 people every year and almost all deaths involve collisions with motor vehicles. Information that is available is as follows :-

• the highest percentage of deaths occur in Summer
• half of all deaths occur in mid afternoon or in the early evening
• males are several times more likely to die than females

Road Junctions

Approximately one third of all bicycle accident related deaths and serious injuries occur at road junctions specifically :-

• bike rider and motorist travelling at right angles to one another and both going straight ahead at a junction
• rider turning right across a road and into the path of oncoming traffic
• motorist emerging into path of a rider usually from a side road or driveway
• motorist turning across path of rider when travelling in the opposite direction or after having overtaken the cyclist
• cyclist riding into the road and into the path of a motor vehicle particularly when riding off a pavement or out of a drive way or side exit
